Boycotting and Smuggling Stories
My name is Esther, and I am a Daughter of Liberty. When the British decided to tax all of our paper with
the Stamp Act, I thought of a way that I could help my
friends and neighbors boycott other British goods. I
thought, "Maybe we have to buy their paper, but we
don't have to buy their cloth!" I worked day and
night, in a small room at the back of my house so
British soldiers wouldn't see me. In there, I spun
homemade cloth so that other women could use it to make
clothes for their families. Thanks to me and other
women, less British cloth was bought and sold.
My name is Richard, and I am a tea merchant. I was
so upset when the British parliament told us that we must
pay a tax on all paper! When did anyone tell the British
parliament what we thought or wanted? Well, if we have
to pay Britain extra money for paper, I know how to at
least give them less money for tea. There are many Dutch
ships that come by, and they are loaded with tea. Even
better, their tea is less expensive than the British tea. I
have to meet the ship captain in the middle of the night,
but it's worth it when I think of all the money Britain is
NOT getting, thanks to our smuggled tea from the Dutch!
My name is Louis. Even though I am 7 years old,
my mother tells me I can be a Patriot too. I am
going to boycott all paper goods I don't need.
I don't play with cards anymore, and Mom can't
bake as many sweets for us now. But I know I am
standing up for what is right.
Write in as you...What if HB said you had to pay a tax for using the internet and tax on each paper you printed? Follow the above examples to write in your feelings to HB.
Hi, My Name is Eva. I am ten years old. My parents pay tuition and this was not disclosed to them in the initial contract they signed at the start of the school. If you impose this new tax, it voids my contract with the school. We would want a full refund of our tuition and I will be attending my home public school for free. I surely think you would not want to lose me as one of your most prestigious students at Hathaway Brown.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Cali my parents and I are not happy. HB can’t tax us just because I used the internet and paper. I really like this school and i don’t want to leave just because I used the internet and paper. So I would hope that the school didn’t tax people just because of that.
ReplyDeleteEven though I said that we should pay taxes, I still agree with you. I don’t want to pay taxes, but I still see King George’s reasoning. I could have said this because I agree with both sides.
DeleteAgreed
DeleteHi my name is Isla and i am 11 years old and my parents are not happy that we have to do taxes i told them that doctor bissele made us they didn't listen i think that school shouldn’t make kids do taxes, and its annoying that we have to pay to use inner net and print stuff.
DeleteI think that we deserve this. That army costed a lot of money. And I think that since we started the war, we should have to pay the king back. If we didn’t go over the Appalachian Mountains, we wouldn’t have to pay taxes. That was our choice. He told us not to, and he was right. So I think that we put this on ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your idea I think they we should not have to pay for the Wi-Fi or the paper here at HB because we use it for school and we already pay the tuition for the education and the supplies.
DeleteI disagree as well. We don’t deserve this because we already pay so much to go here and yes, the army did cost a lot of money but King George can not use US as vending machines and this is not how to get more money from us.
DeleteHi my name is Sonia and I totally think this is unfair that we have to have to be taxed on internet and papers we print. This is so mean! We are only children going to school to learn and shouldn’t pay taxes. So now if I have to pay taxes I will leave this school and get a refund if that’s allowed. Also this wasn’t in the contract my parents signed when I first joined. If this is going to continue I will have to leave.
ReplyDeleteEmmeline,
DeleteI totally agree with you my parents signed a contract to!
Hi, My name is parker I think that it is unfair that we are going to have to pay for our paper at school. One reason is that when we print papers it mostly for a school class. Another reason is that our parents already pay for our education which is expensive, and we do not need to give more money to the school for paper that teachers tell us to print. The last reason is that it is unnecessary the school should make an enough money to pay for paper considering for all the students that go here and pay the tuition witch should pay for the paper. I do not agree with the schools new policy.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Emmeline. I agree with HB to tax us for paper and internet but it is ready so expensive to go to this school. Plus we have to use are iPads for work if they make us stop using it then we wouldn’t even use it. I do agree fully with the paper because the only time we should be printing paper is for a test or for a poster in grow. Also sometimes we are not even aloud to bring a whole lot of money to school.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the paper!
DeleteI disagree with the paper because HB is the reason we’re printing in the first place. If every time we have a project using paper that will cost us, and this gives HB free will to have us spending money because HB can make us print as much as they want which will only benefit them and make us pay more.
DeleteHi, my name is Hatice. Honestly, my parents pay enough to this school for my education purposes, so I can learn here. Adding to the tax, I think it would be too much for me to think about because my parents already pay for groceries, my random shopping sprees(I sometimes pay for myself), and so much more. We also are not allowed to print random stuff, but we use the printer for education purposes. It’s the same for our internet. I think that the school should be using the some of the money from our parents/guardians for the supplies, printers, and internet, instead of taking extra money. If Hathaway Brown publishes this rule I am sure that you will be losing a lot of precious students, including me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything that you said, Hatice.
DeleteHi,My name is Brooke. My parents pay for me to go to school they both signed a contract for me to go to school. It was not assigned for me to pay taxes. So now I will go to a public school so I don’t have to pay.I think you will regret losing me as a student. Now I don’t have to pay for tax at my public school.
ReplyDeleteI agree if they don’t change it I would leave
DeleteI agree with you, but I put the other thing. Every student as valuable to the school and losing someone would be very bad.
DeleteI agree with every thing
DeleteI agree
DeleteHi, my name is Anna. I’m sure many of you have heard about HB trying to impose this new tax. I’m not the only person who doesn’t agree with this outrages idea. My parents are trying really hard to pay for my education and if HB makes this tax law true, my parents may not be able to keep up with the money that they have to pay. Also, I print a lot of papers at HB and I have to work on all of my Online school projects so the money and bills would come in way quicker than any of my family intended. I am praying that this new tax law won’t become a real thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree HB shouldn’t make us pay taxes it is very unfair and my parent also may not be able to keep up with the unfair tax’s.
DeleteIf HB said that we would have to pay tax for every paper we printed and to use internet I would not understand why we would have to pay tax, unless they have a clear reason for us to pay taxI will not pay If they came and asked us what do you think about this rule I would say “Our parents pay enough money for us just to go to school here I will not pay money unless you have a reason for us to pay you, you also did not tell my parents when they payed for this school that we would also have to pay tax”. This is why I will not pay tax and that this is very unfair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in every single way possible, Isa
DeleteHi, It’s Ellie. I totally agree with you because i think its unfair if you have to pay tuition AND for appear and Wi-Fi. Also I don’t believe they have a good clear reason to make us pay for wifi and paper.
DeleteI agree with you. I also wouldn’t like the fact the school would do this.
DeleteI think you are right are parents do have to pay for groceries and to pay those taxes they would just be waisting more money
ReplyDeleteIf HB said we had to pay for a tax using the internet and tax on printed paper, I wouldn’t feel to great about that because I wouldn’t understand why they would switch it up to something not all parents would like, and due to that, I feel like this wouldn’t be as great. It’s not too bad of an idea, however it’s not great. I feel like how the taxes are now are already good on how they do it. Plus, my parents pay for the tuition and they probably won’t like how It would change, especially if it was in the middle of the school year or something close to that since they paid a different way before, they wouldn’t want to change it in the middle of the school year. Also, imagine all the parents that would want to leave the school and go to a different one just for changing how they do the taxes.
ReplyDeleteI agree, because we already pay taxes for other stuff. Also if they did, why would they just switch it up, they would loose a lot of students.
DeleteHi, I am Zoey. I would not like if our school did this, we don’t need to use our iPads if anything it’s better not to be looking at a screen, but we need to use them for Kahoot in PAS class, Typing Agent for Computer Science, and sometimes we need to go on them to look at our homework for Humanities. I don’t really use the printer that much, but sometimes we need to use the printers to print out our stories for Humanities or Foundations. So the only reason we’re really using the printers/paper and our iPads, is because we need it for class.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we already pay taxes for other things.
DeleteHi, my name is Maya. I don’t think it would be fair for the school to have us pay tax for internet usage or papers that we need to print since they are used for classes. I don’t think that the school has the right to have us pay extra and we would want a refund. You might lose students if you have everyone pay extra, and it would be bad for the school.
ReplyDeleteYes, the school isn’t being fair about this. I would leave the school if they don’t change it.
DeleteI agree, the only reason we use this stuff is for class.
DeleteI agree with you Maya.
DeleteFrom,
Lina
I agree, it’s not fair that we have to pay some paper and the internet.
DeleteHi, my name is Thea. My parents sent me to Hathaway Brown and I DON’T think that we should have to pay taxes every time we use the internet or to pay taxes every time we print because our parents payed to have us go to school not just to use the internet or print because we Learn not for school but for life!
ReplyDeleteHi, My name is Ellie. My parents pay the tuition to go here, and this statement was not in the contract they signed. As everyone here pays the tuition the school should be able to provide the paper and Wi-Fi. This tax may cause a downfall with the students paying to go here and affect Hathaway Brown. If this tax moves forward through the school, we would want a full refund of the tuitions we were paying for.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you in every single way.
DeleteEllie I totally agree with you because this tax really could ruin our school!
DeleteI completely agree that this will also be bad for other companies, not just Hathaway Brown.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Morgan and I’m eleven years old. I am very privileged to go to such a great school and my parents already pay a lot for me to get the best education I can get. I believe it is unfair to make us pay for printing school papers and using the internet. The first reason I believe this is an unfair rule is because we use our iPads every day at school. If our parents had to pay for every single time we went on our iPads at school, the money would be through the roof! The second reason I believe this is an unfair rule is that we print a lot more than we really need to. If we had to pay whenever we printed a school paper, the expenses would again be through the roof. After all this money our parents are spending just for us to go to school, print paper, and use our iPads they would be bankrupt! So this is why the dear students of Hathaway Brown should not pay to use the internet and print school papers.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Lina. I do not think that the students at HB should have to pay taxes for each paper we print out and for using the internet. The students and their families already pay a large tuition for us to attend HB. I do not think we should have to pay taxes along with the expensive tuition. If the facility feels very strongly about us paying taxes, I believe that they should consider making a survey for each student and their families to fill out. Once the look over these surveys they will quickly realize that lots of students and families are very agents paying taxes for each paper printed out by their child or children. They will also would not want to pay for the internet that we use. In conclusion students and families should not have to pay for every day learning.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you
DeleteI agree with you Lina
DeleteI totally agree with you Lina!
DeleteHi my name is Rebecca. I don’t think it’s fair that just because me and my classmates need a little paper to draw and internet to do iPad assignments, and we have to pay for it. We’re just kids and just because some colonists went over some mountains that wasn’t our choice. That was theirs. I really just want to say that us kids don’t have to pay for what the adults do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Our parents already pay enough for the year’s tuition.
DeleteHi, my name is Kahli. I am ten years old. Hathaway Brown is a private school, and we should not have to pay taxes on top of the year’s tuition to use the internet and paper. If you do this, you will lose many students who are willing to pay the year’s tuition. This will be a massive drop for the school’s profit due to many students’ absents. I will be attending another private school if I start getting taxed. This is a disappointment that you would ever consider taxing me and my fellow students for the paper and internet.
ReplyDeleteI agree
DeleteI agree with everything you said
DeleteI think that that is totally unfair I would rather pay it off by working
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Cinyi. I am ten years old. HB is a private school, and all taxes should be included with the tuition. If there is this much tax, many students will leave and go to other schools that don’t have tax. It isn’t our fault that the adults decided to cross the mountains, we didn’t do anything wrong. You will lose money when people stop coming.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Jules. I don’t think it’s fair to tax us with the amount of money our parents pay for school. They work hard just to pay the tuition, and on top of that they need to pay taxes. I don’t think that’s right. If you make our parents pay taxes many people are going to leave, and that’s not going to be a good reputation for the school if your losing lots of kids.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI think that is unfair because our parents already pay a lot and it would be unfair I will not use the internet or printer if I start getting taxed.
Hi, my name is Arabella and I think that we shouldn’t be taxed, because we use our iPads almost every day at school, and our parents paid for our school supplies and our tuition, so the last thing parents or kids need is to have to pay for a piece of paper especially because we take art class, and use paper, and we take computer science and use computers every day, so that would be so expensive! Also, since I’m in 5th grade, we were just able to use the printers, and I think that paying for a piece of paper that we could use to educate ourselves is completely unfair. I 100% disagree with you taxing us.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Graycen. I am ten years old. Our school is a private school and I don’t think we should have to pay taxes and tuition to be able to use the internet and paper. HB is expensive and I don’t think really anyone wants to pay more money for why we got in trouble, that’s what the flags are for.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because our family members pay a lot of money to get us into this school and now we have to pay more to stay in the school and be a good student
DeleteHi my name is Amie, and I don’t think we should be paying taxes on top of the tuition to use internet and paper. Many people probably wouldn’t come and there would be many absents.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Parmise. I think that it is unfair because we are already paying so much so why do we have to give more
ReplyDeleteHi ! This is Kyndal I am 11 years old and i am fellow student at Hathaway brown , I don’t think that we should be charged to go onto to the internet or to get paper because. It’s selfish my parents would not be happy if they found out what the school was doing . We go on our iPads almost every single day and if we were to pay that would almost be our whole tuition i think it would be best if i went to another private school
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Pearl. I guess I think it’s fair that I should be punished for what I did. But maybe making me pay for every little thing is excessive. Especially because I’m 10 years old. You can punish me but I don’t think you should expect everyone who was involved in this to have money to pay you. We’re 5th graders! Maybe I will not say anything about you to my parents if you punish us in a different way. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this statement! 😊
DeleteI agree. This is to harsh for fifth graders! But I think we should still be punished but maybe in another way.
DeleteHi I am Aditi. My school is Hathaway Brown and I have been here for two years. Recently the principal Dr. Bissele had made this new rule that makes no sense. She said that now every day we have to pay taxes to use the printer and electronics. This is horrible because the school wants more money when they clearly have enough. Because this is a private school our parents spend so much of their salary on our tuition and sending us with more money would be a lot. If we need these IPads and printers for class then if they make us pay I am not going to participate in class. Soon this will lead to several absences at Hathaway Brown.
ReplyDeleteHi I am Lia I go to Hathaway brown but I get if we have been bad but I think that we can compromise and maybe we could even no pay for the paper other wise I will get an F and I don’t care i get kicked out of school then too bad but I will not pay extra for my paper I mean we can for like a week but no more.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I couldn’t stand a day.
DeleteMy name is Lilah and I am 10 years old. I do not think that the new taxes are fair. Our parents pay a lot of money to get us into this school but now we have to pay more whenever we use the printer or the internet. This is a very good school and I do not want to drop out because our parents are paying more. I do not think to is fair to be punished for the actions of others because sixth grade was being bad and misbehaving but all of the cores and the whole middle school have to pay the consequences of their misbehaving.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Camryn and i agree
DeleteHi, I’m Anneke. I’m sure you all have noticed the new unfair tax that has been sent in place by our principal. I strongly disagree with this new tax. First off, it wasn’t included in our contract in the beginning of the year. This uncalled for tax violates that contract, and allows me to sue the school. Our misbehavior has been on obvious flaw, but on top of the the around twenty thousand dollars you get from each student a year, you should be able to cope with it. This new act is infuriating parents as well, and some are contemplating pulling us out. This will eventually lead to the school going bankrupt with the lack of funds. In addition, many people like me sue the school.
ReplyDeleteIn our history lesson, we learned how people dumped hot tar on tax collectors. I have a lot of glue and willing to use it.
And hot glue and staple guns. And knives…
Delete-_-
DeleteWhat is that buddy?! What is THAT!!!!!!!!!?????
DeleteWhat do you mean? :)
DeleteHi, I am Camryn. I am I think that this is unfair that she is charging us for these things like , printing and internet
ReplyDeleteI am not the the one who caused the problems to make Dr. Bissele mad.
I think that it is unfair that she is charging everyone. I am not on Dr. bissele’s side i think it is very unfair that she is charging us for my classmates mistakes.
Agreed, it is unfair
DeleteHi I am Veronica I go to HB and Dr. Bissele said we have to pay for the internet and paper. I would find A different school that dose not do taxes I would find a whole new country if that was what it took. ✌️
ReplyDeleteYes Veronica, then if everyone quits they go bankrupt!!!!!
DeleteHi i am Paige, i think this whole tax thing is very unfair. I think this because it wasn’t on the contract when we signed it. I also think that this is unfair because every kid makes mistakes and now we have to pay for it witch is very unfair. My grade didn’t do anything and now we are get punished for other grades. We already payed tuition witch was enough money now tax. This is so unfair!
ReplyDeleteHI buddy i am Charlotte ands I totally agree 100% this is not ok!
DeleteHi, my name is Caitlin. I am ten years old. I understand why we should be punished but I do not think it should be this harsh. Is there a way to compromise this? I need the money for my family. Is there a way we could repay a different way like cleaning or taking away privileges. I also think that it is a little unfair to be punished for the actions of others. Only one grade was being bad so I feel only the grade that was bad should be punished. If this continues some people will probably drop out of school or they might even sue the school. So I suggest we stop this once and for all.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Caitlin
DeleteI agree Caitlin
DeleteHello, I am Gabby. I am eleven years old and go to the school Hathaway Brown. And a new rule stated we have to pay taxes with printers and iPads. I think this is wrong because if this is a punishment I don’t think everyone should become a victim since not all of us have done something bad. The students paying taxes could also be because HB wants more money, even though there is at least 300 people in this school paying over $20,000, which would be enough to buy supplies. I think if there’s a rule or punishment because someone did something, we should not all be punished and at least be able to protest. Paying taxes could also ruin Hathaway Brown because some parents will get angry for paying extra for paper, which will lead to its of people leaving this school. And HB will lose 30% of the students. These are reasons why i believe Hathaway Brown should not make students have to pay taxes.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Caroline. When it comes to this, I’m very indecisive. I do agree with Dr. Bissiel that we were being bad and we had to pay the price like the colonists’ had to do with King George III. But, we do pay a great deal of money for tuition. We use the printer more than 3 times a day. At least I do. We have to pay probably 4 cents every time we print something. So we are paving like $4.00 dollars a week for a year. And we get on our iPads 5-6 times a day. I’m on both sides. Dr. Bissiel has her reasons and we have ours.
ReplyDeleteI think our tuition pays more than enough for supplies. Five students makes them around a million dollars. They can cover it.
DeleteHowdy my name is Charlotte and my principal Dr. Bissele created a terrible rule we have to pay taxes on using any electronics and printer. I know we were a bit mischievous ,but i still think it is totally unfair that we have to pay taxes for the internet which we use all the time, and printing papers! We are only kids and my parents aren’t happy about paying extra money for this school. I am not here to pay taxes I am here to learn. Plus since I refuse to pay taxes my grade has gone down a lot which is not ok! I might have to leave this school if we have to continue paying taxes.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Allis. I think that taxing our paper and Wi-Fi is not right. What if other grades were being bad, what if we didn’t even do anything? That’s not our fault. Also we have to print stuff for school and be on the Wi-Fi for school, so if we aren’t getting education, the school will have to drop the taxes. Then we will be good kids. Hehe
ReplyDeleteYas
DeleteJust so everyone knows the “Allis” that said “Yas” was Anneke
DeleteHi, my name is Liliana, I’m 10 years old, and I go to Hathaway Brown school. I do think it is a little unfair to pay money every time we go on the internet and print something. Our parents already pay a lot of money to go to this school, so they don’t need to pay anymore. If we do misbehave I think a better choice would be to sit down and talk with us about our mistakes and talk about how we can not make those mistakes in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Maxima. I go to Hathaway Brown. I understand why Dr.Bissele wanted to tax the whole middle school on using internet and using the printer because one of us misbehave, but also on the contract our parents signed before they sent us here it didn’t say we would be charged for using the internet or the printer. In this situation I am not on a certain side.
ReplyDeleteHi I am Madeleine. At Hathaway Brown we are being charged tax for using the internet and printer. I think it’s unfair that people who didn’t misbehave or didn’t disrespect Dr. Bissele still has to pay the extra tax. If we boycott it will give us Fs on assignments and it would make going to this school not worth the $10,000 we have already payed. I am not a loyalist, but I still pay the tax to use these items.
ReplyDeleteMy parents and I don’t think Dr. Bisselle should be taxing us on using the wi-fi and printing off the printer. The teachers tell us to use it for classes and it can result in a bad grade if we don’t. We already pay tons of money just to attend school here, so if Dr. Bisselle wants us to pay the taxes she can take it out of our tuition and we will refuse to pay extra. The school is going to lose a lot of students because they won’t want to pay the taxes. Adults/Parents already pay home taxes and store taxes and making them also pay taxes on a school that they pay a tuition, that’s just cruel. Parents/Adults also might lose tons of money that is spent on necessities.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI posted before, but I’m doing it again. So go and check out my other one because it is more exciting. But now that I have calmed down, I have a more strategic plan. First, we must all sue the school. All the different cases can be very difficult to manage. Then, most likely, the school will just have to pay a certain amount to all of us, or remove the tax. But if that doesn’t work, we need a few people to work as spy’s. As we gather information about the teachers, especially secrets, we can turn the teachers against each other. Then, we have to start training for court. We will make a grade inclusive debate club where we will discuss our tactics. Then, we will go to court. I’m assuming some parents are lawyers, or judges. They will definitely be an important asset. This is to be continued….
ReplyDeleteI totally agree and i am willing to help you sue the school and i will also be a spy they don’t have a right to sue us.
